Garrett A. Mason honored by the Civic and Progressive Action Association of the Matoaca Magisterial District (CAPPAAMMD)

GARRETT A. MASON is a member of the MMHMF Board of Directors. In May, he was recognized for his service to the community by the Civic and Progressive Action Association of the Matoaca Magisterial District (CAPPAAMMD) at its 36th Annual Awards Banquet.

Garret’s attitude and motto is if he has it, he is willing to share it with you, and if he doesn’t have it, he can surely find someone who does. Like our namesake, Martha Mason Hill, he gives from the heart without expecting anything in return. We will probably never know the full extent of his goodwill, because he doesn’t seek the spotlight we’re shining on him, but no one is more deserving, and so we share his story.

Garrett loves God, his church, his family, people, animals and cooking! His catering business, that offers quality and value, has customer service at its core and as a result is very popular. He is an integral part of Union Grove Baptist Church where he serves as the leader of the Ushers’ Ministry and is a part of the Finance Ministry. He has prepared and served food for the hungry for many years.

Garrett continues to be a very active member of MMHMF and among our strongest advocates in the community, freely providing personal resources and garnering a great deal of outside support. In addition to the Board of Directors, he serves on the Finance and Hospitality Committees. Every year Garrett gratuitously caters every Foundation event (at least four) that includes food, a major contribution to the financial goals of MMHMF.

A few years ago, the Petersburg, Virginia Progress Index newspaper highlighted outstanding individuals who regularly make a difference in the lives of others in the community. In July of 2007, Garrett was featured in an article written by Brenda R. Henderson because of his unselfish devotion to family, friends and the community. In describing Garrett in her glowing narrative, she used terms and phrases such as: rare; a handyman; generous spirit; infectious smile, witty; joyful; committed; well mannered; a person of great integrity; treats people right; respectful; polite and courteous; kind; “go to guy”; a devoted Christian, husband, father, friend and neighbor. We completely agree with Ms. Henderson’s assessment.
