MRS. MARTHANN OTELIA LEWIS BRON WOODLEY ADAMS
2009 Community Service Award

Marthann was born May 23, 1937 to parents Rev. McCoy Lewis and Mrs. Lucille Lee Lewis.  She is the eldest of four children and the only daughter of this union.  She was educated in the Chesterfield County Public Schools, graduating from Carver High School in 1954.  She attended Virginia State College and married Fitzugh R. Brown in 1955 with whom she had two children, Dwight and Renia.

Marthann has always been actively involved in the work of her heavenly Father.  She was initially a member of Union Branch Baptist Church in Chesterfield County but joined her husband, Fitzugh, at Brown Grove Baptist Church in Midlothian.

Following the death of her husband, Fitzzugh Brown in 1970, Marthann returned to Virginia State College.  In 1976 she completed her undergraduate degree in Technical Education.  She married William H. Woodley in 1976.  Sadly, he passed away in 1984.

Continuing her education at Virginia State University, she earned a Masters of Education degree in 1979 and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Vocational Education in 1991.

In 1988, Marthann married John H. Adams.  She has four grandchildren Dwight Jr., Steven, Stefan and Aaron Brown.

Her employment history includes: a cosmetologist (50 years); food service worker for Chesterfield County Public Schools (three years); child care provider at Zion Day Care Center (four years); Southside Training School Supervisor (18 years); cosmetology instructor at Richmond Technical Center (24 years); and In-school suspension teacher for Chesterfield Public Schools (five years).

Marthann has always been involved in caring for and nurturing children and adults.  She encourages people to be just, loving and merciful and to walk humbly with God.

At Brown Grove, she has been involved with the following ministries: Sunday School, Ushers, Deaconess, Trustees, Education Committee and Children’s Church.  She served as Chairperson of the Ushers Ministry for a number of years, and as Superintendent of Sunday School for 23 years.  In addition, she has served in the leadership role for various other ministries, special occasions, services and programs.  Presently she is Chairperson of the Education Committee and teaches Children’s Church.  She is a strong and willing witness for her Father’s love, her brother, Jesus’ compassion and the power of the Holy Spirit.

Marthann has received honors and awards form Brown Grove Baptist Church in 2005, the Deacon and Deaconess Union of Chesterfield and Vicinity in 2004 and the Sunday School Union in 1995.  She was also honored by the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority in 2002 as a Pearl.

She begins each day with prayer and meditation.  Her favorite scripture: “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help.  My help cometh from the Lord, He made heaven and earth.”

Psalms 121:1-2

Mrs. Adams spends countless hours volunteering her services in the community. She has been a major supporter of MMHMF since it began in 1998.  She has made substantial financial contributions annually, attended and participated in the Awards Program, and routinely helped with Foundation outreach projects and programs.  She is always willing to help others in the community any way she can.
