The school year was very busy and a huge success thanks to the continued efforts of our dedicated Outreach Committee! Every month something was happening! Members go the "extra mile" to help students on all levels, elementary school to college. Whenever our team was asked for help, they never failed to "answer the call", often at significant personal sacrifice. They are truly "guardian angels" for Southern Chesterfield students and schools, exemplifying the ideals of our namesake. Three elementary schools, a before and after school program, a middle school and a high school are supported each year.
FOR THE FIRST TIME: With the help of a grant from Ettrick Neighborhood and Business Foundation (ENBF) and a donation from Nancy Ross, Vice President of ENBF, the Foundation sponsored the first of what we hope will be many trips to college campuses for students attending Matoaca Middle School. Members accompanied the students. See the pictures on page 12.
School supplies were collected over the summer and delivered to the three elementary schools and the before and after school program (this program also receives snacks during the year).
Members and volunteers went to Harrowgate and Marguerite Christian Elementary Schools to read to students in the lower grades every month.
The First Generation Parents/Students Workshop and the Annual Seniors Awards Breakfast were sponsored at Matoaca High School. Board member and caterer, Garrett Mason provided the breakfast and attended with Board member Ann Henderson.
Care Packages were sent to college students in February.
Funds were donated to Matoaca Middle School to: help purchase books for a school-wide reading project and to finance the transportation for students to see the play I HAVE A DREAM performed by the Virginia Repertory Theatre.
Over 500 books were ordered from the Children's Museum of Richmond Book Barn and distributed to students in three elementary schools and the after school program to take home for summer reading. Outreach members placed book marks and labels in every book. A donation was given to the Book Barn.
Certificates for a Vacation Bible School and other honors for students were prepared and distributed.
Ettrick Elementary School was given funds for students without lunch and no money to purchase it.
